Cinco cinco cinco de Mayo! Since it’s Cinco de Mayo, I wanted to add to my existing healthier for you margarita! My disclaimer- I am not saying drinking is healthy, but if you enjoy wine or a cocktail, may as well make it with ingredients you feel good about! So as I posted in this blog post about my healthier margarita, there are variations that keep my margs not only colorful sometimes but varied. Today I’m adding a blood orange into the mix. If you’re wondering why blood orange, let me tell ya!
Not only do blood oranges have vitamin C like regular oranges, they have anthocyanins- a pigment that gives them their red color variation. This also happens to be an antioxidant, which antioxidants are known for their ability to eliminate harmful free radicals. Now I’m not saying adding it to alcohol is the best way to get the nutrient benefits from your blood orange, but if you have some on hand may as well throw one into your margarita! It also gives a very nice pinky tone to the margarita. Very Sparkle Up Buttercup.
So let’s make our blood orange marg so we can sip on a wonderful margarita while we are watching Game of Thrones!!! Anyone else a fan of that show?? I can’t wait to see what is going to happen tonight
BLOOD ORANGE MARGARITA
Recipe will make approximately 2 smaller drinks or 1 very large drink. Sharing isn’t always caring when it comes to a delicious margarita
4.5 oz fresh squeezed lime juice (this is pretty consistently 3 limes for me)
4.5 oz blanco tequila (3 shots)
1-1.5 oz grand marnier (triple sec or any orange flavored liquor. Can even squeeze an orange. In this case I’m out of orange liquor- my blood orange will have fill that hole)
1 blood orange
1 tablespoon raw agave syrup (can adjust to taste)
Add about ½ cup of ice to a cocktail shaker. Pour in tequila and orange liquor if using. Squeeze three limes and blood orange into shaker. Add agave. Put top on and shake that bad boy! You’ve done a good job if you have ice chips in your drink. Pour into glass. I don’t do salt or sugar on my rim but if you dig that for decoration purposes- edge ½ rim of glass with lime and roll in some salt. Voila!
You now have an amazing drink to enjoy your Cinco de Mayo with Game of Thrones. It’s going to be such a great night!! If you're interested in just the original version margarita
